We achieve them, set them and dream them. We get up every morning and put one foot in front of the other and go about our day. But some of us choose to live a little differently. We choose to have a dream, set goals to achieve that dream and reach milestones while realizing our dream coming true. There are many obstacles along the way. Sometimes we may stray from the path. Sometimes for a long while. We wonder about going through our daily activities, but in the back our minds, down deep in our hearts, it’s still there. One thing leads to another and we find our way back to the path and we continue our journey. We remember that goal we set a long time ago and still have the same dream. With determination we trudge forward, one foot in front of the other, one step at a time…
Just a few short years ago, I began a journey with the guidance of a friend. She encouraged me, pushed me and showed me the way. I was scared and nervous at first. But after entering a few local small print competitions, I got my feet wet. I finally got the nerve to begin entering at the State level, then Districts followed by International. I took baby steps. gaining more confidence as I went, learning more skills and refining my craft. Even failing a time or two, but those failures only made me work harder, be more determined, ask more questions and apply what I was learning along the way.
It starts with a dream, followed by setting a goal and ends with reaching the milestone. Through determination, perseverance and dedication I was honored and humbled to received the Professional Photographer of West Virginia’s Photographer of the year award this past weekend in Morgantown WV. Just when I felt defeated and was ready to give up, I entered my images in to print competition anyway. They were scored by a panel of judges of colleagues and among all of the images and entrants that were eligible for the award, my case of images scored the highest. I was in disbelief as I was presented the award.
This just goes to show. DON’T give up. Keep trying, even when you fail, get up and try again. People are watching and will help you along the way. I could not have attained this accolade without the help and encourement from many friends and colleagues. They were brutally honest with me when they needed to be and lifted me up when I was down and shared my excitement when I succeeded.
So for the rest of 2018 I get to include “ 2018 PPWV photographer of the year” after my name.
